A Note From the Executive Director

Summer is certainly here in Houston! As the heat and humidity build, some of us are drawn inside to air conditioned spaces, but many of us are pulled to shady parks and the sound of water. Luckily, the Bayou City can satisfy both of these needs!

Greens Bayou flows through a largely urban area dominated by major roads, buildings, parking lots and residential development. Adding green spaces and recreation along the bayou is important to the health and well-being of the citizens. Adding trees and plants helps to reduce the heat island effect, stops erosion, filters water- and air-borne pollutants, and helps to reduce flooding.

Green spaces are just as important to the economy of the watershed. A healthier, cleaner, more beautiful watershed draws more residents and businesses to the area.

One of the pillars of the Greens Bayou Coalition mission is bayou restoration, and includes tree plantings and bayou cleanups. Another is advocacy for and facilitation of parks and trails in the watershed. Last planting season, GBC volunteers added 50 trees to an urban park, and this November we have plans to add 85 trees along a bayou trail. If you're in the mood for a summer bayou cleanup, we're heading out to Brock Adventure Park with Galveston Bay Foundation for a joint project - the One Less Plastic in July Cleanup on July 27. Join Greens Bayou Coalition in making this the best possible place to live, work and play!

Please Welcome Our New Summer Intern!

Please join Greens Bayou Coalition in extending a big welcome to Emily Matthews, our intern for the summer. Emily attends the University of Arkansas, and will be assisting with cleanup projects, including the One Less Plastic Cleanup, and our social media sites. She will help with community outreach and marketing material design and provide support in recruiting volunteers. She is a welcome addition to the Coalition!

BPA's Resilience at Home Summer Workshop Series

The Bayou Preservation Association continues its "Resilience at Home" climate-smart workshop series on Saturday, July 20th, from 10 AM - 12 PM at the Kashmere Multi-Service Center at 4802 Lockwood Dr., Houston, TX 77026. This month's topic is "Yard Waste." Explore the art of composting and transform yard waste into valuable resources for healthier soil and ecosystems.

The final workshop, Rain Harvesting, will take place at the same time and location on August 17, 2024.

Dr. Tyler Olivier Joins the Board

We are pleased to announce the latest addition to Greens Bayou Coalition's board of directors: Dr. Tyler Olivier, San Jacinto College Generation Park STEM department chair. Dr. Olivier received his PhD in Environmental and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and has taught biology at San Jacinto since 2015 and shared his passion for science, biology and the environment with students ever since. Please extend a warm welcome to our newest board member!

Greens Bayou Coalition is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. We rely on the support of our community to continue advocating for quality of life in the Greens Bayou watershed, including flood mitigation and parks and trails along the Bayou, an underserved and often forgotten area of Houston. We need your help. Please consider donating.
